For Healthcare Professionals

 

This is a collection of videos of the presentations given on April 1st, 2017 at Mount Sinai Hospital. 

There were over 100 healthcare professionals including physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, recreation therapists, psychologists, nurses, and social workers in attendance. This conference set out to enrich the awareness of healthcare professionals regarding sexuality after SCI and to increase their comfort and skill in talking to patients with SCI about sex beyond the basics of fertility and erection aids.

Keynote Speech

Dr. Danielle Sheypuk is a clinical psychologist and winner of the title Ms. Wheelchair New York 2012, is widely regarded as a "sexpert" and leading commentator on the psychology of dating, relationships, and sexuality for the disabled population. Dr. Sheypuk talks here on changing the culture of American sexuality by the integration of people with disabilities as potential romantic and sexual partners.

Male and Female Sexual Response After Spinal Cord Injury

Dr. Marcalee Sipski Alexander is an internationally recognized researcher and physiatrist who has been instrumental in describing the effects of SCI on sexual response in both women and men. Here she describes the sexual response for both men and women after SCI as well as discusses treatments for SCI related sexual dysfunction.

Improving Reproductive Success After Spinal Cord Injury

Dr. Jeffrey Klein is a board certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist whose areas of expertise include SCI and treatment of infertility. Dr. Klein speaks here about options for helping couples in whom one of the partners has a SCI successful conceive a child.

Dr. Marcalee Sipski Alexander is an internationally recognized researcher and physiatrist who has been instrumental in describing the effects of SCI on sexual response in both women and men. Here she discusses how to document sexual dysfunction using the International Autonomic Standards developed by ASIA and ISCoS.
 

Lauren Varriale, OT

Positioning And Adaptive Devices

Lauren A. Varriale, MS OTR/L is an Occupational Therapist whose primary specialty is in the area of neurological rehabilitation, specifically SCI. She developed the Mount Sinai Sexuality SCI Education Series, and works with couples to help them regain intimacy via positioning and adaptive devices. Here she speaks about positioning and adaptive devices.

Damon Rozier, Comedian

Damon Rozier, comedian, crashed his motorcycle in 1997 sustaining a C6 spinal cord injury. He was the first wheelchair user to grace the stage of both BET's "Comic View" and TV One's "Off the Chain" as well as ABC's "What Would You Do?".

Adam B. Stein, M.D., is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. He has a strong interest in the education of medical students on the importance of communication. Here he talks about how to talk about sexuality and specifically how to take a sexual history.
